Big Ideas Learning, a subsidiary of Millcreek Township-based Larson Texts Inc., has pledged $100,000 over the next six years to help the Bayfront Maritime Center complete construction of its Porcupine schooner project and to provide maritime-themed math curriculum for onboard programming. Her job at GE brought her to Erie where she began to volunteer for BMC, first at our fundraisers, and then joined the Board of Directors in 2014. Anne’s enthusiasm is contagious! EASE began its 14th season of adaptive sailing on Friday June 20th! BMC started adaptive sailing in 2000, and the EASE program became established in 2001. This is the first and still the only adaptive sailing program in Pennsylvania. It serves the entire tri-state region. THANK YOU to the more than 20 dedicated EASE volunteers who organize, schedule, staff, and sail all day with the sailors, while parents, grandparents,siblings, and caregivers share in their experience while aboard the escort vessel, EASE-Y SPIRIT. Gage, one of BMC’s current Project VOYAGE apprentices, completed multiple projects in the past few months. Thanks to funding from the Erie Community Foundation, Gage and other Project VOYAGE apprentices are learning valuable job skills through one-on-one, long-term mentoring with accomplished professionals. Gage is working with Christopher Laird, a retired FMC mechanical engineer who is also an accomplished boatbuilder and carpenter. With Chris’ assistance, Gage built a shelf for his sister and a wine rack for his mother. Gage has learned construction drafting, the milling process, and how to professionally finish his projects. On the last day of the school year, the high school students in the Bayfront Alternative Education Program (BAEP) turned over the hull of the second St. Ayles Skiff. “Hull-turning” is a significant moment in the boatbuilding process. These students leveled the strongback, set the keelson, planked the boat, laid the keel and outer stems, and turned the hull over. Over 200 BAEP students, Project SAIL apprentices, and student volunteers have worked on this skiff, which will be used in Erie’s first community rowing program at BMC.
Project-based, hands-on lessons in Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) enhance a student’s comprehension of valuable skills needed to succeed in school. STEM Director, Harold Rinn, uses a ShopBot to teach each day. It is an amazing do-all tool for precisely cutting, carving, drilling or machining all kinds of things from all kinds of materials. With a ShopBot, you use software to create your project’s design, which is then precisely cut by machine. Check out our STEM page to see some of the fine work being done by students at BMC.
Maritime Education at BMC is all Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math, STEM learning. Carpentry and assorted vocational skills and career awareness are part of the curriculum, too. But these students are also learning teamwork and problem solving while developing persistence and grit!
It was a bit cold, but the wind was just right! Taco the Town got underway with Project SAIL apprentices on Monday. This was the first time several of these kids had ever been on a boat. They all took turns on the tiller, and went forward to be lookouts. We had the bay to ourselves!
Students designed a project using a Computer Aided Design (CAD) program, then created a layout for the Computer Numeric Control (CNC) digital fabrication machine to follow.
