Apprentices celebrate a successful launch with Executive Director, Rich Eisenberg

Students finished BMC’s second St. Ayles skiff and launched it on May 15, 2015. It was christened, Blue Pike. Pipers, Gib Loesel and Doug Nagle, escorted the skiff to it’s inaugural launch. A dedicated team of over 350 Erie inner-city youth persevered and completed the project in time to row before the end of the school year.  Many thanks to everyone from  BAEP, Project SAIL and Bayfront Summer Program who worked on this project.  It is beautiful and will help provide many years of on-the-water enjoyment for all.

Governor Tom Wolf sends his congratulations to the team.

BAEP and Project SAIL students built the gunwales and the quadrant for the second St. Ayles Skiff and attached them to the boat. Each student worked on a customized wooden box using computer-aided-design software and the ShopBot CNC digital fabrication equipment in BMC’s fully-equipped boat shop. Students  learn hands-on STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) and teamwork everyday at BMC.
