Small boat sailor Howard Rice has returned to Erie to help build the Porcupine. Join us as he shares a few of his experiences rounding Cape Horn solo, sailing remote Pacific islands, the Strait of Magellan, Tierra del Fuego, Patagonia, and more, via small traditionally rigged boats.

This will be a fascinating presentation of photos, video, and stories touching on people, exotic cultures, and of sailing the smallest wooden boats in some of the most remote, beautiful and challenging places on earth.

Unseasonably warm fall weather on the Great Lakes brings learning out of the classroom and onto the water.
Students are navigating a new course, and steering in a positive direction.

Richard has twenty years experience instructing in the Erie School District teaching Woodworking, Social Studies, Intro to Computers, Machine Repair, Welding and Metal Fabrication.

Lee has been interested in the maritime industry his entire life, building his first boat with his grandfather at age 8.  He operated a Marine Sales and Repair business for 40 years and has taught PA State Boating Safety classes.

BMC is pleased to have two such highly qualified maritime instructors and look forward to a safe, fun, productive school year.

Great fun for all ages! Boats are built using only cardboard, tape, paint and glue and compete in races, two by two, and vie for the Fastest Time trophy in four divisions – Children (under 12), Teen (13-17), Adult (18 and up), and Mixed Ages. There are also judge’s awards for Most Creative and Most Dramatic Sinking! The Crowd Favorite trophy goes to the boat that collects the most donations in their can over the course of the day.

It’s the perfect activity for families, clubs, school groups, scout troops and for anyone who just wants to have fun on the water while supporting a great cause! Entry fee is only $35 per boat.

This team of students in the Erie High School Maritime Program is busy completing construction of their underwater ROV. They are replacing the strings used to align and secure all of the thruster and lighting power cables with zip ties, and also fastening the blue buoyancy modules. They are looking forward to conducting underwater trials soon in the Erie High School pool!
