“Adventure Under Sail”

Small boat sailor Howard Rice has returned to Erie to help build the Porcupine. Join us as he shares a few of his experiences rounding Cape Horn solo, sailing remote Pacific islands, the Strait of Magellan, Tierra del Fuego, Patagonia, and more, via small traditionally rigged boats.

This will be a fascinating presentation of photos, video, and stories touching on people, exotic cultures, and of sailing the smallest wooden boats in some of the most remote, beautiful and challenging places on earth.

Program 6:30pm-7:15pm ∙ Intermission with refreshments ∙ Program continues 7:45pm-8:30pm Q/A, and and on-deck tour
Donation – $25.00 – proceeds help build Schooner Porcupine

Through hands-on project-based discovery, teens are designing and building their own craft hoping to build the boat that goes the farthest, fastest, and steers the straightest course, The first planning steps include sketching a concept,  making a scale drawing with dimensions, and listing the construction steps.

BMC students had a wonderful excursion on the Lettie G. Howard, a fishing schooner, owned by South Street Seaport Museum in Manhattan and operated by our neighbor, the Flagship Niagara League. Students practiced sail training skills and learned some of the nomenclature and history of the vessel.Thank you to Captain Goldman for the informative adventure!

They will be primarily helping out with the Erie High School Maritime Program.

Richard has twenty years experience instructing in the Erie School District teaching Woodworking, Social Studies, Intro to Computers, Machine Repair, Welding and Metal Fabrication.

Lee has been interested in the maritime industry his entire life, building his first boat with his grandfather at age 8.  He operated a Marine Sales and Repair business for 40 years and has taught PA State Boating Safety classes.

BMC is pleased to have two such highly qualified maritime instructors and look forward to a safe, fun, productive school year.
